Athletic face a summer reshuffle in goal, with Unai Simón the only certainty, as Mikel Santos is promoted to the first team.

Julen Agirrezabala has returned from his loan at Valencia, who did not take up a 12 million purchase option, and a left knee meniscus problem sidelined him late in the season.

Agirrezabala is contracted until 30 June 2027, with a clause that allows Athletic to extend unilaterally to 2029. Álex Padilla has renewed to 2029 and has an established market in Liga MX. Both want greater prominence, so monetisation or another loan with purchase option, as with Padilla at Pumas, could be considered.

Santos, born in Bilbao in 2004, steps up after an excellent season in Primera Federación, noted for his reflexes. He joins the first team with full rights and will no longer drop back to Bilbao Athletic.

Several Segunda Division clubs have already enquired about Santos, with pre-season at Lezama likely to shape decisions. The club will assess how to manage a four-keeper picture under Terzic.
