Gabigol struck twice as Santos came from behind to beat São Paulo 2-1 at Morumbis, with goalkeeper Diógenes outstanding.
The hosts led from a penalty after Lucas Veríssimo pulled Ryan Francisco in the box. Santos replied soon after when Escobar’s cross found Gabigol, who finished from close range.
Philippe Coutinho made an immediate impact off the bench, turning under pressure and releasing Everton to square for Gabigol to sweep in the winner. Diógenes then produced further key stops and preserved the result with a last-gasp save.
Willian Arão impressed in a defensive role, making vital interceptions, while Rodinei forced the best first-half opening with a fierce effort. Escobar had recovered from illness on the day, yet supplied the equaliser and won the ball ahead of the second.
Rollheiser felt unwell before kick-off, so Lima started but was withdrawn at half-time, as was Barreal. Arthur Melo, composed in midfield, departed early in the second period with pain in the back of his right thigh, and Gustavo Henrique delivered a steady display after the break.
Rony’s late strike nearly made it three, and Thaciano replaced Gabigol and worked willingly. Head coach Cuca’s interval changes helped tilt the contest.
