Santos have signed 30-year-old midfielder Lima on loan from Fluminense until the end of the season, the club announced on Friday.
The club had shown interest in August, and talks between the sides accelerated amid possible injuries to Barreal and Neymar. Although the deal runs only to December, there is a possibility of extending the loan afterwards.
His registration appears on the CBF’s Boletim Informativo Diário. He could be included by coach Cuca for Sunday’s Campeonato Brasileiro match against Internacional.
Lima accepted a pay cut to make the move possible. The plan is for him to be registered for the Copa Sudamericana, with Atlético-MG visiting Vila Belmiro on Wednesday in the quarter-finals.
He had joined América of Mexico on loan from Fluminense in February, a deal through December with a fixed purchase option. He featured in 16 matches, then lost his place after André Jardine departed, had his contract there terminated and returned to Fluminense.
Lima becomes Santos’ third signing since the end of a Fifa-imposed transfer ban, following midfielder Arthur and right-back Rodinei. The Brazilian transfer window closes on 11 September, and Santos are expected to seek a left-back and a forward to complete Cuca’s squad.
