Santos open their Brasileiro campaign away to Chapecoense on Wednesday at 20:00, already under scrutiny after a poor Paulistão. The opener comes without Neymar, without Gabibol and without the expected reinforcements.
According to Globo.com, the immediate task is to collect points to stop the early-season unrest from deepening. Under Juan Pablo Vojvoda, the side have yet to click and currently sit outside the qualifying places.
Off the pitch, the most pressing item is to finalise Rony. Talks have moved to the closing formalities and he is close to joining to offset Guilherme’s departure to Houston Dynamo in the United States.
Rony could also operate more centrally and may cover that role during any Gabigol absences, with Gabigol rested for this first round.
Flamengo’s Michael is also in negotiations to become a Santos player, but issues with his current club still need resolving, so talks are stalled. He is viewed as attacking depth, another piece of business the board hopes to complete soon.
The hierarchy will also review the opening stretch to judge which and how many additions are required for a calmer season than last year.
