Santos will use the World Cup pause to begin works on the Cosmo Damião terrace at Vila Belmiro on Monday 22. According to Diario Do Peixe, the plan is to raise capacity by splitting the existing steps into two tiers.

Once completed, the increased capacity can only be used after approvals from the Fire Department and Military Police.

The club expects the low-cost intervention to pay for itself quickly through higher matchday income driven by the larger crowd.

In April, Santos adjusted the Gate 17 section for members to comply with Conmebol regulations, and in January it reopened the Armando Gomes press room.

Administrative manager Luiz Fernando Vella said the upgrades are important because the ground continues to stage official matches and events, and that the club has identified opportunities to grow stadium revenue. He noted that changes have already been made to meet international competition demands, and that further work will proceed within the club’s financial reality and what is feasible.

Meanwhile, the board is awaiting the Nova Arena project with WTorre. The current works address an immediate need as the team keeps playing at Vila Belmiro and must maintain suitable infrastructure for supporters, international competitions and events.

Even if the definitive Nova Arena contract were signed now, Vila Belmiro would not be demolished in the short term. The project still depends on later stages, including securing the funds required to build the new stadium.
