A São Paulo court has annulled the Corinthians Ethics and Discipline Committee proceedings against vice-president Armando Mendonça.

According to Globo.com, the decision was signed on Thursday by judge Antonio Manssur Filho of the Second Civil Court of Tatuapé, who cited irreparable structural defects that could have led to the loss of the executive’s mandate.

The internal inquiry examined alleged irregularities in the handling of Nike-supplied sports materials. The judge found the main issue lay with Leonardo Fogaça Pantaleão’s conduct, as he was both acting chair of the Deliberative Council, due to Romeu Tuma Junior’s leave, and chair of the Ethics and Discipline Committee, which undermined impartiality.

He allegedly rejected his own recusal, chose the most severe route that could trigger removal, and advanced the case without first appointing a rapporteur. The ruling also noted the absence of a formal rapporteur before the defence period, the lack of the member’s registration file, and use of a procedure incompatible with the club’s statutes.

Pantaleão, in a note, praised the speed of the ruling, saying it came 24 hours after a 28-page submission, and added that he welcomed such promptness being applied to all cases.

The disciplinary process has been fully quashed. The decision does not prevent Corinthians from opening a fresh probe into the flow of Nike materials, which would need to restart and follow the statute, including an authority with no conflict of roles, prior appointment of a rapporteur and the right to a full defence.
