Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has reportedly dispelled all doubts regarding the captaincy by confirming Mattia Zaccagni in this role.
This topic sparked a large debate last summer when the club had to choose a successor for Ciro Immobile. The locker-room senators Alessio Romagnoli, Ivan Provedel and Adam Marusic all rallied around Danilo Cataldi, who is a Lazio youth product. However, the latter wasn’t even part of Marco Baroni’s plans, and was eventually loaned out to Fiorentina.

In the end, club president Claudio Lotito wanted to reward Zaccagni who had only recently signed a new contract, so the hierarchy placed the armband around the winger’s waist, despite a few voices of objection from within the squad.
Following Sarri’s return to the club, the captaincy matter was reopened, especially when the manager failed to confirm Zaccagni during his unveiling, saying:
Unlike other coaches, I don’t place too much importance on that armband. Mattia can keep it, if the locker room wants it.
But according to Il Messaggero, Sarri has now found a more mature Zaccagni, hardened by the responsibility placed upon his shoulders a year ago. Therefore, the 66-year-old has raised all doubts on the matter by reconfirming the Italian winger as the club’s first skipper.
The returning Cataldi has also reclaimed his spot as a locker-room leader, and the source reveals that Sarri has named him vice-captain. Moreover, Marusic, a loyal servant to Lazio since 2017, has been chosen as second vice-captain.
