Inter Milan go head-to-head against Sassuolo at the MAPEI Stadium – Città del Tricolore on Sunday evening, with the home side looking to climb up the table and the Nerazzurri looking to tighten their grip on top spot in Serie A.
Inter arrive in Reggio Emilia unbeaten in 11 league games, while Fabio Grosso’s side have revived their campaign with back-to-back victories over Cremonese and Pisa.
Grosso has no fresh injury or suspension concerns ahead of Matchday 24 other than the ones already sidelined earlier, with Sassuolo’s selection picture largely stable from the side that beat Cremonese and Pisa. Fali Candé and Edoardo Pieragnolo remain sidelined, while midfielder Daniel Boloca is listed as a doubt.
On the positive side, key attacking figures Domenico Berardi, Andrea Pinamonti and Armand Laurienté are all fit and come into this fixture having directly contributed in recent games, with Berardi among the scorers in the 3-1 win away to Pisa.
Inter travel to Emilia-Romagna still hampered by injuries in midfield and at wing-back. Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu remain sidelined and will not feature on Sunday, depriving Cristian Chivu of his first-choice central duo.
Barella is ruled out until mid-February and Calhanoglu until shortly after this game. On the flanks, Denzel Dumfries is still working his way back from a problem that is projected to keep him out until early March, leaving Luis Henrique and Matteo Darmian (fitness permitting) to cover the right side.
Carlos Augusto should be back in contention, giving Chivu another option at left wing-back alongside Federico Dimarco. Chivu heavily rotated his side in the 2-1 Coppa Italia win over Torino. Still, Inter’s big guns will be back at Sassuolo, with Lautaro Martinez and other regular starters expected to return.
After three consecutive league defeats over the winter, Sassuolo have responded with back-to-back wins against Cremonese and Pisa, moving into the comfort of mid-table.
Those two victories have lifted Grosso’s men to 11th place on 29 points from 23 matches, with a goal difference of -2 (27 scored, 29 conceded).
Wednesday’s 2-1 Coppa Italia quarter-final win over Torino extended Inter’s winning streak to four in all competitions, with Ange-Yoan Bonny and Andy Diouf on target in a performance Chivu described as full of “energy” and one that left him “happy with the performance… and with what was put on the pitch”.
Sassuolo: Muric; Walukiewicz, Idzes, Muharemovic, Doig; Koné, Matic, Thorstvedt; Berardi, Pinamonti, Laurienté.
Inter Milan: Sommer; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Luis Henrique, Sucic, Zielinski, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Lautaro Martinez, Francesco Pio Esposito.
