Cristiano Ronaldo has called for sanctions after Al-Taawoun fans chanted about Diogo Jota during their Saudi top-flight match with Al-Hilal. His intervention came the day after the game.

According to Le Progres, several home supporters targeted Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal forward who died in a car crash in July 2025, during Saturday night’s fixture, which Al-Hilal won 6-0, with Ruben Neves supplying an assist to keep them top after seven rounds.

The chants were aimed at unsettling Neves, Jota’s former international team-mate and close friend. He told reporters he hoped those responsible would not go to pray after what they had done, then left the stadium quickly.

On Instagram the following day, Ronaldo urged the Saudi league to act and punish such behaviour.

He said it was not football, that limits are needed, and that anyone who behaves like that should never be allowed back into a stadium.
