Flamengo said in a statement that Saúl has undergone surgery on his left heel in Madrid to address a problem that had caused pain for about three months, and that the procedure was completed without complications.
The operation was performed on Friday by Dutch doctor Niek van Dijk in the Spanish capital.
The midfielder had sought opinions from trusted doctors before deciding, weighing surgery against conservative treatment. Flamengo’s head of medical, Fernando Sassaki, exchanged information with those professionals.
The final call was Saúl’s, and he chose the operation. He will initially stay in Spain to continue his recovery. A return to Rio and to Flamengo routines depends on the Dutch surgeon’s clearance.
The expected recovery window is two to three months, subject to his progress. He will only return after the Carioca, with the Brasileirão already under way.
He will miss the Supercopa do Brasil against Corinthians and the Recopa Sul-Americana against Lanús of Argentina.
