Schalke could make a surprise move for Edin Džeko, with Bild reporting the club are exploring an approach for the 39-year-old striker. The Bosnian previously played for VfL Wolfsburg from 2007 to 2011.

Džeko is under contract at AC Fiorentina. The report suggests he is unhappy at the struggling Serie A side, who are seventeenth, and wants to leave.

Schalke are said to be pitching two key lures, a special contract and the presence of coach Miron Muslic.

The proposed deal would be heavily performance based to protect the wage structure, with extra pay per goal and a sizeable promotion bonus.

Muslic and defender Nikola Katic, both former Bosnia team-mates of Džeko, are expected to help persuade him. Talks with sporting director Frank Baumann are believed to be under way.
