Schlotterbeck poker: BVB is afraid of a move to FC Bayern

The alarm bells are ringing at BVB. Nico Schlotterbeck has still not accepted the lucrative offer to extend his contract – and one concern in particular is growing in Dortmund: the possibility of a move to FC Bayern

After the 2:2 draw against Bodö/Glimt in the Champions League, the focus was less on the result and more on Nico Schlotterbeck. The 26-year-old publicly took his teammates to task with unusually harsh words and spoke of a lack of „winner mentality“. Statements such as „The players who come in lose every ball“ hit BVB to the core. Since the days of Mats Hummels, hardly any player in Dortmund has criticised their own team so openly and relentlessly

As reported by Sky, Schlotterbeck’s words were also the dominant topic internally the following day. Behind closed doors, there were even accusations that he had „stabbed the team in the back“. Such public reckonings are poison for the already fragile internal climate at BVB – and they reinforce the impression that Schlotterbeck is already distancing himself internally from Dortmund

The great fear: Schlotterbeck and FC Bayern

This is precisely the sore point from the point of view of those responsible at BVB. There is growing fear in Dortmund that Schlotterbeck is deliberately playing for time – and waiting for a signal from Munich. According to information from the player’s entourage, the centre-back is leaning towards not renewing his contract. The offer on the table, which would elevate him into the top earning ranks with a salary of over ten million euros, remains unanswered

The concern at BVB is clear: if a door opens at FC Bayern, Schlotterbeck would be hard to keep. The strong left-footer fits perfectly into the profile of Munich, who are looking for German leaders in defence in the long term. A move to Munich – similar to Mats Hummels – would be a red rag for many BVB fans and would damage Schlotterbeck’s position in Dortmund in the long term. This fear is now not only spreading among the supporters, but also among the bosses around Sebastian Kehl and Lars Ricken

What is explosive is that Schlotterbeck himself is currently providing arguments against an immediate extension. His performances have fluctuated for weeks, he has been directly involved in several goals conceded. Statistics such as tackle rate or balls intercepted have recently dropped significantly. Nevertheless, Schlotterbeck remains a player with enormous potential – and that is precisely why he is so interesting for FC Bayern

However, there are clear priorities in Munich: the extension with Dayot Upamecano is the top priority. If this does not materialize, they will look more closely at other players, including Schlotterbeck in all likelihood.
