Schmid ‘to join’ Frosinone in surprise Serie A move | OneFootball

Romano Schmid is close to joining newly promoted Serie A side Frosinone from Werder Bremen, Kicker reports. After failing to agree an extension on a contract that expires next summer, all parties are seeking a solution.

Talks are described as advanced and the move is expected in the coming days, the report said. Bremen are set to search for a replacement immediately.

Bremen will receive a high single-digit million fee from Frosinone, which could rise to double figures with bonuses, the report added. It will not match the €12 million Freiburg paid for Mio Backhaus.

Schmid has officially taken Leonardo Bittencourt’s number 10 shirt at Bremen, but he might not wear it in a competitive match. He has been with the club for more than seven years.

Frosinone hope to avoid a fourth Serie A relegation after the US fund Clara Vista acquired over 80% of the shares.

They have already signed Anouar El Azzouzi from Fortuna Düsseldorf and long-serving Hoffenheim defender Kevin Akpoguma this summer. There are also rumours that Akpoguma’s former Hoffenheim team-mate Florian Grillitsch could join as a free agent.
