Scholes advice ridiculed as expert warns Man Utd to be extra ‘cautious’ as irreplaceable star risks surgery | OneFootball

Manchester United have been explicitly told to carefully manage Benjamin Sesko, as the risk of another long-term stoppage is still looming.

The Slovenian international has been struggling with a shin injury since the spring. His condition was aggravated when he slipped down the slope on the edge of the Old Trafford pitch in a league clash against Liverpool, signalling a premature end to his campaign.

The striker thus missed the entire pre-season while recovering from his knock, before making his return on the opening day of the new campaign in Hull.

Since his return, Sesko has been struggling to replicate the form he displayed during the second half of the previous campaign.

It has been evident that the 23-year-old hasn’t fully overcome his physical issue. This was confirmed by Michael Carrick’s decision to drop him from the matchday squad for the Fulham game last weekend.

In his interview with Metro, CEO and founder of Kitman Labs Stephen Smith warned Man Utd against taking Sesko’s condition lightly, as the slow recovery suggests the injury hasn’t fully healed.

“The risk is always there with recurrence. With injuries like this, you are playing a game of whack-a-mole,” said the injury expert.

“They can be very challenging. I would be confident they won’t just be doing the same thing because that hasn’t fixed it.

“Caution is the right word here. Given this has flared up again they will be inclined to be more cautious, not less.”

Smith thus believes the Slovenian could be facing another few months on the sidelines based on his last stoppage.

“Unless he responds incredibly quickly and very differently than last time around, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a similar time frame and similar time lost as we saw last time.”

If Sesko doesn’t fully recover in the coming weeks or months, perhaps a surgery should be considered.

‘If it keeps resurfacing and imaging points to something more structural like a stress fracture that isn’t healing, more invasive options become part of the conversation.

‘Sometimes surgery can be considered.”

Scholes & Butt’s advice must be ignored

After missing the last game against Fulham, Sesko was astonishingly told to harden up and play by a couple of Man Utd legends.

“If it (your shin) isn’t broken, just wear your shin pads,” said Paul Scholes, while his friend and co-host Nicky Butt added: “You’re a player – you either break your shin or you play!”

Luckily, neither Scholes nor Butt is in charge at Man Utd, as based on Smith’s expertise, Carrick has done the right thing by dropping Sesko from his squad.

However, this is a tough pill to swallow for the MUFC head coach, as the Slovenian is practically irreplaceable in his squad amid the lack of striking options.

Carrick doesn’t truly trust Joshua Zirkzee to lead the line, while Matheus Cunha, Marcus Rashford, and Bryan Mbeumo are more effective when playing as part of the support cast.

Therefore, United’s failure to offload Zirkzee and replace him with another centre-forward has already backfired.
