Former Manchester United academy graduate Scott McTominay has turned his career around since leaving Old Trafford in 2024 to join Napoli. The Scottish midfielder was deemed surplus to requirements during the reign of ex-manager Erik ten Hag and was replaced by Manuel Ugarte.
The move proved to be a controversial one, as the Uruguayan never lived up to expectations at the Theatre of Dreams. Ugarte failed to impress under Ten Hag, and was also a peripheral figure under his successor, Ruben Amorim.
Even the arrival of Michael Carrick in January this year did little to revive the 25 year old, who continued to be a peripheral figure at the club. The English giants have reinforced the midfield this summer by signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba.
Ugarte, meanwhile, picked up an ACL injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and remains sidelined for now. McTominay, on the other hand, has turned into an iconic figure in Campania.
McTominay hit the ground running after arriving at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, helping Napoli win the league in his debut season. The player was adjudged the Serie A MVP and also earned a place in the list of 2025 Ballon d’Or nominees.
Most of all, McTominay struck a chord with fans, forging an impregnable bond with supporters. This was evident from the fact that the player earned the nickname “McFatm”, and a shrine was erected in his honour in Vico San Nicola a Nilo in the historic centre of Naples.
Last season, the 29 year old helped the Partenopei finish second in the league, registering 14 goals and four assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
The Scot’s efforts have also seen him linked with a blockbuster return to Old Trafford, although that looks very unlikely. However, it now appears that McTominay could have the chance to explore a different league this season.
According to Fotomac, Fenerbahce are considering a move for McTominay after securing qualification for the Champions League. The report states: “It has been reported that Scott McTominay, the Scottish maestro at Italian giants Napoli, has emerged as a potential target for Fenerbahçe, who are expected to make a star signing following their qualification for the group stage of the Champions League.”
The Turkish club’s director, Cihan Kamer, has already held talks regarding the Scottish midfielder. The report continues: “The landing of Fenerbahçe director Cihan Kamer’s plane in Naples, Italy, also thrilled the yellow-and-blue supporters.”
“It has been reported that Kamer held transfer talks with Napoli officials regarding the 29-year-old star midfielder.”
Fotomac suggests that McTominay has a €40 million price tag on his head, concluding: “The Scottish footballer’s current market value is reported to be 40 million euros.”
Many fans will feel that United missed a trick by allowing McTominay to leave, even though the player divided opinion during his time at Old Trafford. Napoli signed him for around £26 million, which has certainly proved to be a bargain.
