The Scottish Football Association has withdrawn its backing for Gianni Infantino, further isolating the FIFA president. According to L'Équipe, the move was confirmed on Tuesday by SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell.
Infantino has faced a deep crisis since the announcement of a plan, later scrapped, to privatise part of the World Cup.
Maxwell said the SFA would not vote for Infantino, adding that the stance aligns with UEFA’s position and has been maintained throughout. He cited governance failures, a lack of transparency and insufficient dialogue with member federations, and said transparency and governance must change, with the exact form still to be debated.
Several associations have already stepped away in recent weeks, including the English, Irish and Welsh federations.
UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation also withdrew support, issuing a joint letter on 10 August stating that football does not belong to any individual.
