Sean Dyche desperate to deflect attention away from the Everton shortcomings, especially his own.

Woeful negative tactics had seen Newcastle United rack up ten corners and the home side not a single one of their own.

Whilst possession (67%) and territory saw Eddie Howe’s side completely dominant, summed up by Newcastle United having 42 touches in the opposition penalty area, whilst Everton had only 12.

Sean Dyche was always going to clutch at the very thinnest of straws following this luckiest of points, having seen his side totally dominated on home turf.

The Everton boss only wanting the post-match discussion to be about one thing…

“Jordan Pickford has done great and made a good save [from Anthony Gordon’s penalty] and then we don’t get awarded one.

“Everyone knows about our record of not getting penalties.

“You get frustrated.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin is trying to finish it.

“Let’s put it this way, if that’s in the middle of the pitch is he giving a foul? I would say absolutely.”

There is nothing wrong with what Sean Dyche is saying, except for the fact of course that it is absolute nonsense.

Sadly, so much of the media has so little integrity, journalists and pundits and other ‘experts’, that they will happily play along with this Sean Dyche deflection from reality, rather than confront it.

Sean Dyche wants everybody to blindly believe that the two ‘penalty’ incidents were similar level, when nothing could be further from the truth.

TV replays clearly showed Tarkowski throwing Sandro Tonali to the ground, the most obvious of penalties.

TV replays clearly showed Calvert-Lewis kicked Dan Burn, the most obvious of non-penalties.

If you were at the match then it is very difficult, all but impossible to know these things for sure.

However, this is exactly why VAR was brought in, to try and ensure blatant mistakes are not made. We all know that VAR hasn’t been a smooth ride BUT in this match it worked perfectly.

Nick Pope made a very good save from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 67th minute but couldn’t get it to safety, the Everton striker then tries to go for the rebound but kicks Dan Burn as he tries to connect with the ball. Idrissa Gueye does though get to the rebound and somehow misses an open goal, blazing the ball over the bar.

No wonder Sean Dyche only wants the conversation to be about these few seconds of the match, as it was the only five seconds when they threatened in the entire match!

Indeed, two of their twelve touches in the Newcastle penalty area happening within those few seconds.

After Nick Pope saves the ball, Dan Burn goes to clear it, only for Calvert-Lewin to foul him, not the other way round!

Not only was it never a penalty in a million years, surely even if Gueye had not missed the open goal, the ‘goal’ would have had to be disallowed for the foul on Burn, as the Newcastle defender would have cleared it, if Calvert-Lewin hadn’t hacked him down.
