German reports say Hamburg are closing in on signing Sebastiaan Bornauw from Leeds after an eye-catching pre-season, a move that would leave Daniel Farke light at centre-back.
Leeds are less than a fortnight from their Premier League opener and their window remains active, despite three signings and £80m already spent.
Bornauw has stood out this summer, impressing against Sunderland, Liverpool and Leipzig. He was in contention to face Man United in Ireland on Wednesday, but he might not travel given the potential move.
The Belgium defender was linked with Koln earlier in the summer and a return to Germany after just one season in the Premier League has long felt plausible. His departure would thin Leeds’ options in the middle of defence.
Signed for £5m last summer, Bornauw has been steady when used and rarely errant in a Leeds shirt. Farke had admired him for some time, and in 2021 the player noted interest from Norwich and Crystal Palace, plus Lazio, before choosing Wolfsburg and expressing a wish to play in England one day.
There has been little on this in the UK to date, though the situation could develop quickly. Any sale so late in pre-season would likely demand a replacement be ready.
