Sebastián Cáceres has spoken up for Marcelo Bielsa after Uruguay’s early World Cup exit, challenging claims of dressing room unrest.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Bielsa was set to depart after this summer’s tournament regardless, but draws with Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde and a loss to Spain removed any chance of a fond farewell. Criticism has been fierce.
After the Spain defeat, Bielsa said he had given Uruguayan football nothing because without positive outcomes a coach’s contribution is futile.
He has flown home and plans a press conference, having already snapped at a post-match interview that started late. Cáceres, who plays for América in Liga MX, was reportedly the only player on the same commercial flight into Montevideo.
Declining to reveal private discussions, the defender said some leaked claims were completely untrue, twisted and manipulated to portray Bielsa badly, which he felt was not right.
Cáceres added that Uruguay conceded avoidable goals and made life harder for themselves. He expressed respect and gratitude for Bielsa, while accepting others may see it differently.
