In the last couple of weeks, Lamine Yamal has spoken many times of his desire to play alongside Nico Williams at club level next season. The pair have been in spectacular form for Spain at Euro 2024, and the prospect of them playing together at Barcelona has supporters extremely excited, although Athletic Club will have something to say about its chances of happening.

Williams is a leading target for Barcelona, who are eyeing up a new left winger during the summer transfer window. He’d cost €58m (his release clause at Athletic), an amount that will be hard to reach for the Catalans. Nevertheless, it hasn’t stopped a second player from dreaming of playing alongside the 21-year-old.

During an interview with MD, Pedri spoke on the prospect of playing with Williams at club level.

“It is clear that he would be a spectacular signing. He is a player who we are already seeing what he is doing in the European Championship. Hopefully he can be with us, but we don’t know yet because he has a contract with Athletic. What has to happen will happen.”

Pedri also discussed Mikel Merino, another Spain teammate that has been linked with Barcelona in recent weeks.

“Mikel is a player I like a lot in midfield, especially in aerial duels. I’m always telling him that it’s impossible for him to lose one. He wins them all. He is a footballer who puts his body in very well and covers the ball very well. He’s a player who, when we play against Real Sociedad, I find it very difficult. He has many qualities, both with and without the ball. He recovers a lot of balls, he is a very complete player.”

Signing Williams and/or Merino would be extremely good business by Barcelona, although it’s far from certain that they will be able to pick up one, let alone both. Their financial situation will be the defining factor.
