Christoph Freund has apparently made a name for himself in the Premier League through his work at FC Bayern. The sporting director of Germany’s most successful club is said to have been discussed at Liverpool FC as a potential candidate for a key position.

As reported by the English website TEAMtalk, the Reds were considering Freund as a potential successor to Richard Hughes. Hughes had left Liverpool after two years as sporting director and moved to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Freund’s name is said to have come up during the search for a successor. However, a move will not take place. The 49-year-old recently extended his contract with FC Bayern on a long-term basis through 2029, thereby making a clear commitment to the Munich club.

The report does not indicate whether concrete discussions have already taken place between Liverpool and Freund. The only thing that is certain is that the Austrian was discussed as a possible solution by officials at Anfield Road.

Liverpool apparently had Freund on their radar

Freund has been with FC Bayern since 2023 and has become a key figure within the club’s sporting leadership in Munich. Together with sporting director Max Eberl, he plays a pivotal role in the record champion’s squad planning.

Before his time in Munich, Freund had made a name for himself primarily at Red Bull Salzburg. There, he worked in the sports department for many years and was responsible, among other things, for signing and developing numerous young talents.

Apparently, his achievements also impressed Liverpool. Following Hughes’ departure, the Reds need to restructure their sporting leadership and, according to TEAMtalk, were considering the Bayern sporting director in this context.

For Liverpool, however, this possibility appears to have been ruled out. Freund has committed his long-term future to the German record champions.

Just a few days ago, FC Bayern officially announced the extension of Freund’s contract through June 30, 2029. In doing so, the Munich club provided early clarity on another key position.

After the extension, Freund himself described his role at the record champions as a “matter close to his heart” and made it clear that he still has big plans together with the club’s leadership.

The 49-year-old also enjoys a high level of trust within Bayern’s leadership. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen emphasized at the time of the extension that Freund plays a central role in sporting decisions. Eberl also highlighted the close collaboration with his sporting director.
