FC Bayern is in the running for JJ Gabriel. A close confidant of Max Eberl could play a key role in the pursuit of the Man United prospect.

The race for JJ Gabriel is picking up steam. The 15-year-old Manchester United forward apparently wants to leave the top English club and is even said to have asked to have his registration revoked. United, however, does not intend to let the highly talented homegrown player go without a fight.

FC Bayern is also keeping an eye on Gabriel. Sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed the interest— at least indirectly— on Thursday: “I don’t talk about players who are under contract with other clubs. We’re familiar with the player because he’s very, very talented—an exceptional talent. But I can’t say any more than that.”

When asked whether there was currently any contact with Gabriel, Freund replied: “Not at the moment.”

According to information from BILD, there’s an interesting detail behind this statement: While there may be no communication at the moment, the Munich club has reportedly been in close contact with Gabriel and his entourage since February. A face-to-face meeting between the parties is even said to have already taken place.

Wernscheid maintains contact with Gabriel

Bastian Wernscheid apparently plays an important role in Bayern’s recruitment efforts. The 36-year-old works closely with sporting director Max Eberl and, according to BILD, is among those maintaining contact with Gabriel’s camp. As early as late February, Wernscheid is said to have tried to make a move to Munich appealing to Gabriel’s inner circle.

A transfer would still be complicated, however. Gabriel is English and, due to FIFA regulations, could in principle only join a club in the EU once he turns 18. However, because of his Irish father and his mother’s Cypriot roots, there is a possibility he could obtain an EU passport. This could make an earlier move possible.

Added to this is the fierce competition. In addition to Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain, among others, are interested in Gabriel. The “Royals,” in particular, are said to have a strong hand right now. According to BILD, interest from Munich has even cooled off somewhat recently.

Nevertheless, Bayern Munich apparently hasn’t written off this exceptional talent just yet. Should there be new developments in the Gabriel saga, the early contacts established—and in particular Wernscheid’s connections within his inner circle—could prove valuable for the German record champions.
