Borja Iglesias was briefly stopped from re-entering Spain’s team hotel in Tennessee after security did not recognise him.

Footage aired by la Sexta showed staff keeping the Celta striker behind barriers outside the Embassy Suites by Hilton Chattanooga Downtown in Tennessee, United States, with supporters and reporters nearby.

Spain had been given a day off by Luis de la Fuente between the Cabo Verde game and Sunday’s meeting with Saudi Arabia. Iglesias had spent time away from the hotel alongside his partner, María Valero. After the goalless draw with Cabo Verde, that game has become crucial for Spain’s World Cup hopes.

He told guards he was a Spain player and that he needed to come in, but they asked if he had a pass and whether he was a player, declining to let him through. Onlookers tried to clarify the mix-up, while others expressed disbelief.

Asked for his name, he replied Borja Iglesias, which was echoed by fans and journalists nearby. The footage then shows him taking out his phone to contact someone from the Spanish camp in order to resolve the situation.
