Borja Iglesias was briefly denied entry to Spain’s World Cup hotel after security failed to recognise him, with LaSexta broadcasting footage of the incident. The Celta de Vigo striker had to wait at the perimeter before being allowed back in.
The mix up came on the rest day granted by Luis de la Fuente between the opener against Cabo Verde and a crucial meeting with Saudi Arabia. Spain drew 0-0 in their debut and were told to switch off for a few hours.
Iglesias left the Embassy Suites by Hilton Chattanooga Downtown in Tennessee with his partner María Valero and friends, enjoying time away from the camp. He returned later to the team hotel.
Security staff stopped him at the barriers and questioned whether he had accreditation and was part of the squad. Supporters and reporters nearby looked on, some trying to persuade staff they were stopping a Spain international.
Iglesias tried to explain in English that he was a Spain player and needed to enter. He gave his name as Borja Iglesias, and onlookers echoed his identity.
He then called a member of the Spain delegation on his phone to verify his identity, after which he was allowed through. The brief episode ended without further issue.
Spain returned to training on Thursday to continue preparations for a high stakes fixture after the unexpected stumble in their opener.
