Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United career may have been written off too soon. The 28-year-old has returned to Old Trafford following his season-long loan at Barcelona and is reportedly determined to earn another opportunity at his boyhood club.

Barcelona decided against activating their purchase option despite Rashford enjoying a productive campaign in Spain, leaving the England international back at United with two years remaining on his contract.

Much has changed while Rashford has been away. Michael Carrick is now in charge, and that managerial change could provide exactly the fresh start the forward needs after his relationship with former boss Ruben Amorim deteriorated before his departure.

Rashford is determined to revive Man United career

According to The Sun, Rashford has returned to Carrington and joined Manchester United’s pre-season camp in Dublin as he attempts to rebuild his career at the club.

Rashford has not played competitively for United since December 2024, but his situation now looks considerably different.

His old No.10 shirt has moved on to Matheus Cunha, and he is expected to wear No.14 if he remains at Old Trafford.

Barcelona had the opportunity to sign him permanently for around £26 million but chose another direction, leaving Rashford without the move to Spain he had wanted.

His substantial salary has also made finding another permanent destination complicated.

Carrick could be the ideal manager for United attacker

This reunion could actually work.

The Times reports that Rashford returned from Barcelona after producing 25 combined goals and assists, while United are not currently interested in simply sending him away on another loan.

That matters because Rashford is coming back with confidence rather than returning after another disappointing season.

Carrick also knows him well from their previous time together at United, potentially giving the forward a manager willing to judge him on what he can offer now rather than what happened under Amorim.

There are still questions over consistency and whether Rashford can rediscover the intensity that once made him one of United’s most dangerous attackers.

But selling a rejuvenated academy graduate cheaply would make little sense either.
