Selton Sánchez’s immediate future at Athletic is uncertain during the summer lull, with a decision resting with new coach Edin Terzic. The 19-year-old midfielder broke through last season but his progress stalled amid limited league minutes.
As reported by as.com, he is being considered for pre-season, although if Terzic does not lean on him a Segunda loan is viewed as the better route, as seen with Canales, Gerenabarrena, Olabarrieta and Rincón, who then had a top-flight loan with Girona. He has not yet received instructions, so both paths remain open.
He is seen to need more physical robustness. His return last season spanned four games for Basconia, 289 minutes, nine for Bilbao Athletic with 462 minutes in Primera Federación, and 13 first-team outings under Ernesto Valverde for 370 minutes, three starts and 10 from the bench.
He also featured in the Champions League against Newcastle, Slavia Prague and Sporting de Portugal. With a squad nearing 40 players, including returning loanees, contracted first-team players, promotable reserves and any external addition, finding room for him is a live question.
The coming weeks could bring clarity on his place under Terzic. For now, his role is under assessment and his development route remains undecided.
