Sem Westerveld joins Real Zaragoza on three-year deal after AZ exit | OneFootball

Real Zaragoza have signed goalkeeper Sem Westerveld on a three-year deal following his departure from AZ Alkmaar.

According to Diario Vasco, the Dutch national arrives after a standout loan at MVV Maastricht in the Eerste Divisie, where he played all 38 league matches.

He made 155 saves last season, kept six clean sheets and averaged more than four saves per game.

Developed at AZ Alkmaar, he debuted for Jong AZ in 2021, played 40 matches in the second tier, then moved on loan to Maastricht. Since 2021 he has made 79 professional appearances in Dutch football.

Born in San Sebastián on 18 July 2002 at Clínica Quirón, he is one of three sons of former Real Sociedad goalkeeper Sander Westerveld, who played for the club from 2001 to 2005.

At his unveiling he said his father had often spoken about his time in Spain. He recalled living as a child in Mallorca and Almería, not in San Sebastián, and described Real Zaragoza as a big, historic club. He added that choosing Zaragoza felt the best move for his career and that he is very happy to be there.
