Senegal’s players were welcomed as heroes in Dakar late on Monday after their Africa Cup of Nations final win over Morocco. They won 1-0 after extra time.
According to L'Équipe, hundreds of supporters waited around the airport for hours as the champions arrived several hours behind schedule.
The Lions of Teranga landed on a special flight shortly before midnight local time from Morocco. They were greeted by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and members of the government.
Celebrations swept the capital and its outskirts through the evening, with fireworks, firecrackers, vuvuzelas and blaring horns. Fans waved large Senegal flags on foot or in cars speeding through the streets.
Festivities are expected to continue on Tuesday. A large public parade through Dakar is due to start at 11 local time, 12 in France, and is expected to last several hours. The players will then head to the presidential palace later in the afternoon or in the evening.
