Ousmane Sonko confirms Senegalese state intervention

Senegalese prime minister "regrets" conviction of 18 fans in Morocco
Speaking before the national parliament on Tuesday, Senegal's Prime Minister revisited the case of 18 Senegalese fans who were sentenced in Morocco following incidents during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
The Senegalese head of government expressed his regret at the lack of a diplomatic resolution despite his efforts, those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and even President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
We believe this issue goes beyond the purely sporting context. We must say this responsibly. It's unfortunate, especially considering the strong and historic ties between our two countries. Sport and passion often go hand in hand, but this situation could have been handled differently. Recently, during the Olympic Games, Moroccan fans stormed the pitch, causing a match to be suspended for more than two hours. The game later resumed behind closed doors, with no sanctions issued. This shows that incidents can happen in sports and can be managed with composure.
Ousmane Sonko confirmed that further legal steps are underway to appeal the initial sentences. "If the Moroccan authorities decide to grant a pardon, we would welcome that. If not, there are bilateral agreements between our countries that allow us to request the transfer of our citizens to serve their sentences in Senegal," he added.
It's worth noting that the sentences handed down to the eighteen fans range from three months to one year of actual prison time.
