The brother of Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has explained why he was initially against the switch to Old Trafford.
United confirmed the signing of Lammens on transfer deadline day, who arrived from Royal Antwerp.
The Red Devils and Antwerp struck a deal at around the £18.2m mark. United made the decision to snap up Lammens after difficult starts to the season for Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
United were not intending to add a goalkeeper, but circumstances changed when it became evident neither Bayindir nor Onana could be trusted.
Lammens was named on the bench for Sunday’s 3-0 loss at the hands of Manchester City. Bayindir was handed the start but failed to vindicate the decision, delivering a nervous display that left much to be desired.
Lammens will be eager to earn a start against Chelsea this weekend as he looks to ignite his United career.
Ahead of the clash, his brother Tom Lammens has admitted he doubted whether the goalkeeper would fulfil his potential at United, suggesting Galatasaray might have been a better fit.
Tom told Het Nieuwsblad, “There’s a lot of quality, you play for trophies there [at Galatasaray], and Senne could perhaps immediately make his mark in the Champions League.”
“I was initially sceptical about a move to United, because many players there had already succumbed to the pressure and couldn’t reach their full potential.”
“But ultimately, it was Senne who had to make the decision. United gave him the best feeling. Partly because Tony Coton, United’s goalkeeping scout, had been following him for almost a year and was very convinced of his qualities.”
“It would also be great if the club could return to its former glory and if Senne could contribute to that.”
If handed the chance versus Chelsea and he delivers, Lammens has a real opportunity to cement his place as United’s No.1.
