Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has tipped his former club to go all the way and win the FIFA Club World Cup ahead of their opener against Wydad AC.
City have the chance to add to their silverware cabinet before beginning their preparations for the 2025-26 campaign when they participate in the 32-club competition which can give them a massive financial boost should they bring the trophy home to Manchester.
Pep Guardiola will have incoming signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri through the door to make the travelling squad – with Jack Grealish set to be left out as the 29-year-old England international searches for a new club.
Manchester City also remain in advanced negotiations with Lyon to sign France winger Rayan Cherki, who has the world talking about him after a starring cameo in his nation’s 5-4 UEFA Nations League semi-final defeat to Spain last week, when he came off the bench to score, provide an assist and wreaked havoc in a manner similar to Kevin De Bruyne.
Speaking to the club’s official channels ahead of Manchester City’s Club World Cup opener against Wydad AC in ten days’ time, Sergio Aguero has tipped his former club to do themselves proud and win the competition in the United States.
“They’re always favourites, and it all comes down to their mentality, as it’s not easy to always carry the tag of favourites,” the Argentine said.
“(Manchester) City are where they are because Guardiola knows how to keep that mindset. They’ve been doing the same thing for years, which is why they’re favourites.
“Pep (Guardiola) simply never rests. Nor will you see him playing a different way; he’s going to play the same way he always does, even if he loses.”
Manchester City centre-half Manuel Akanji has criticised the tournament as an unnecessary barrier in the way of players to get much-needed rest after a long-drawn playing schedule, but Guardiola will be relishing the chance to assess the hunger in the dressing room after a sub-par season to go out and compete on all fronts next term.
“He (Guardiola) is not going to change his style, and that’s something positive. He’s got a great bunch of players – a dream team you could say and Pep knows how to talk to them,” Aguero added.
“These (Club World Cup) games will be an opportunity to show everyone the South American mindset and nature. I expect our (South American) sides to really battle – it’s something that comes natural to we South Americans.
“I also believe it’s very important for clubs to be at this tournament. It’s not going to be easy, but I think they’ll do their utmost to go as far as possible and ensure South America comes out of it with its head held high.”
