Career

The Argentine shot-stopper played for AZ Alkmaar and Sampdoria before signing for Manchester United in 2015.

Romero played 61 times for United during his six seasons at the club.

He became a cult hero at Old Trafford after achieving a fantastic clean sheet record, keeping an impressive 39 in total.

The Argentine keeper also won the Europa League and played in the final when Jose Mourinho’s side ran out 2-0 winners over Ajax.

Romero also represented Argentina an incredible 96 times and played in the final of the 2014 World Cup.

Post-United career

After departing United in 2021, Romero had a brief spell back in Italy with Venezia before joining Boca Juniors in his native country.

He spent three seasons at the Argentine giants, reaching the 2023 final of the Copa Libertadores.

Romero then departed for Argentinos Juniors earlier this season. The 39-year-old only ended up playing four times for the club, however.

Retirement

Owing to his lack of minutes, ESPN has reported that, “Sergio ‘Chiquito’ Romero has decided to retire from professional football after his last stint with Argentinos Juniors.”

The keeper reportedly “had several offers during the transfer window to continue playing at least until 2026, but due to family reasons, he decided to end his career and already knows what he will do in the future: he will become a coach.”

The 2025 Copa Argentina final against Independiente Rivadavia on 6th November 2025 proved to be his final match as a professional.
