Serie A’s reputation as one of Europe’s most competitive leagues is firmly intact, despite ongoing concerns about its overall standing on the continent.

Inter Milan finished 11 points clear of Napoli in last season’s title race, but may be pushed much harder this time around.

Manager Cristian Chivu has built on the foundations established by Simone Inzaghi, yet there is a feeling this team is reaching the end of its cycle.

Many of their top players are approaching the latter stages of their careers, and the club has not made too many moves to address the situation.

Yann Sommer, Denzel Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij, Francesco Acerbi and Matteo Darmian have left the club this summer. Replacements are thin on the ground.

John Stones is their biggest signing after his exit from Manchester City. However, a 32-year-old on a free transfer does little to bring down the average age of the squad.

Inter should still be in title contention this season, but their rivals could make life more difficult for them. Local rivals AC Milan may be the value bet to topple them.

Milan were on course to qualify for the Champions League last term, but a late-season implosion resulted in them dropping out of the top four.

Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been tasked with guiding Milan back into contention, and it would be no surprise if he succeeded.

After flopping badly in the Premier League, the former Sporting CP manager has arrived in Serie A with a major point to prove.

The big-money signing of Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain could be a game-changer for Milan, giving them the cutting edge they lacked in front of goal last season.

Their tally of 53 goals was the lowest of any of the top-six sides last term. If Ramos hits the ground running, Milan could be genuine title contenders.

Juventus should also be in the mix. Luciano Spalletti is taking charge of his first full season at the club, and he will fancy his chances of guiding them to the Scudetto.

The Turin giants have been active in the summer transfer market, and could benefit from not featuring in this season’s Champions League.

Juventus and Milan are both in the Europa League this season, and playing in that competition could help to boost confidence in their respective squads.

By contrast, Roma and Como may find their squad resources are stretched as they strive to make their mark in UEFA’s top-tier competition this term.

That factor could play into Napoli’s hands. They have more experience of balancing their domestic duties with Champions League participation.

However, the appointment of Massimiliano Allegri as manager raises questions. He has replaced Antonio Conte, who guided Napoli to the title in his first season with the club.

Conte was unable to repeat the feat last term, and the club have decided to head down a different route. Many people are baffled by Allegri’s appointment.

He last won the Serie A title with Juventus in 2018/19, a statistic which has triggered talk that the 58-year-old’s best managerial days are behind him.

Allegri will believe that assessment is harsh, particularly as he came close to securing Champions League qualification with Milan before their late-season collapse.

Rasmus Hojlund’s loan move from Man United has been made permanent, so Napoli have the firepower they need to mount a sustained title challenge.

The return of Kevin De Bruyne to fitness should be a boost after he missed most of last season through injury, but he is not getting any younger.

If Napoli strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes, they should be capable of a top-four finish, but winning the title may prove to be beyond them.

Amorim’s appointment coupled with the big-money signing of Ramos could ultimately be the determining factors in this season’s title race.
