Napoli’s title ambitions have taken a sharp hit following Kevin De Bruyne’s significant thigh injury, described internally by sporting director Giovanni Manna as a major blow. His admission sets the tone for what promises to be an aggressive January for the club. As Manna stated before the Champions League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt, “For us, Kevin De Bruyne’s injury is serious. There are few players like him,” adding that Napoli are “looking around, we’re making all our assessments, and we’ll be ready at the right time.”
It is a blunt acknowledgement of both the quality of De Bruyne and the urgency now surrounding their midfield.
Calciomercato report that Napoli revisited several names from their summer shortlist. Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo was one such option and remains monitored closely. The young midfielder had explored leaving Old Trafford for more minutes, and although he stayed put, Napoli believe his situation could change quickly if opportunities remain inconsistent. A club source quoted in the original report suggested that Mainoo “could become a hot name in the coming months” and that the Italian side have kept scouting data updated.

Fabio Miretti is another profile Napoli hold in high regard. Napoli held discussions with Juventus earlier this year, and the report notes that his creative attributes “perhaps” mirror De Bruyne more closely than others on their list. According to the article, reopening negotiations in January is “not out of the question”.
The market picture broadens with the inclusion of Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini. With no immediate progress on contract renewal talks, Napoli see potential room to manoeuvre. The article adds that Napoli have been admirers of Davide Frattesi for more than a year and even made late contact in 2024 while he was already preparing to sign for Inter.
Napoli’s challenge lies in finding creativity without compromising balance. De Bruyne’s injury window extends to February at minimum, and with Anguissa expected to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, reinforcements are not a luxury, they are a necessity. The January market may be volatile, yet Napoli’s intent is sharper than ever. As one internal opinion added in the Calciomercato text, “Napoli will be ready at the right time”, a line that signals confidence but also pressure.
From a Manchester United supporter perspective, this report instantly triggers curiosity about Mainoo’s situation. Any time a major European club begins circling, fans naturally wonder how secure a young talent truly is. It is well known that Mainoo wants meaningful minutes, and while United are committed to his development, the season has been chaotic enough to justify external interest. Napoli’s admiration makes sense. His composure, tight control and ability to transition play mirror the type of midfielder they lose when De Bruyne is unavailable.
However, from a United fan point of view, the idea of losing him in January feels unrealistic. United are unlikely to sanction any departure unless it involves a loan that guarantees high-level minutes. Even then, sending him to a Champions League chasing Serie A side who need immediate impact might overload him during a sensitive development phase.
There is also intrigue around Napoli tracking other names like Pellegrini and Frattesi. For United fans, this reinforces that Mainoo is part of a wider list, not the top-priority signing. Napoli are clearly applying pressure across several avenues, which reduces the probability of them pushing excessively hard for one target.
What it does highlight is how quickly European clubs value English academy products. If Napoli push again in January, United supporters may fear the club being caught off guard. For now, the immediate takeaway is reassurance. Mainoo is needed more at Old Trafford than he is available for the market.
