Juventus have dropped their interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez after deciding the overall cost of a transfer had become too expensive. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the Italian club informed Aston Villa they would not continue talks, although the decision had already been taken internally several days earlier. Once Juventus reviewed the financial package, they decided the figures no longer made sense.

That brings an abrupt end to a transfer story that gathered momentum throughout recent weeks. Aston Villa refused to reduce their asking price, while Juventus stayed firm over their spending limits. Rather than drag negotiations on without progress, the Serie A side chose to walk away completely.

Villa’s position never really changed. Martínez remains one of the club’s most valuable players after another outstanding campaign. Across the 2025/26 Premier League season, the Argentina international made 32 appearances, played 2,835 minutes, recorded seven clean sheets and conceded 39 goals. His influence stretched into Europe as well, where he kept six clean sheets and allowed only seven goals in 11 UEFA Europa League matches during Villa’s trophy-winning run.

Juventus miss their preferred option

This feels like a genuine setback for Juventus. Luciano Spalletti reportedly identified Martínez as his first-choice replacement for Michele Di Gregorio because he offers far more than reliable goalkeeping. His leadership changes the mood of a defence. His presence settles difficult matches before they become chaotic.

Big occasions rarely intimidate him either. During Argentina’s journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Martínez featured eight times and produced an astonishing 11 saves across 120 minutes against Spain. Those numbers explain why Europe’s biggest clubs continue to admire him despite his age.

Juventus now face a difficult decision. Alternative targets such as Guglielmo Vicario and Zion Suzuki have quality, yet neither arrives with Martínez’s proven record at club and international level. That difference matters.

From Villa’s viewpoint, accepting a lower offer would have made little sense. Replacing an elite goalkeeper would demand another major investment, while Martínez still performs at the highest standard. The asking price reflected his value rather than wishful thinking.

Juventus deserve credit for sticking to their financial limits instead of forcing an expensive deal. Even so, losing the goalkeeper Spalletti wanted most leaves an obvious gap. Martínez remains one of football’s defining match-winners between the posts, and Aston Villa never looked under pressure to compromise once Romano confirmed Juventus had stepped away.
