On Sunday (9), Athletic defeated Criciúma 2-0 at Arena Sicredi in São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais, moved closer to the playoff qualification zone, and ended Tigre’s 15-match unbeaten run. The 15th round of Série B continues this Monday (10) with the clash between Goiás and Londrina, and comes to an end on Tuesday (11) with the match between Avaí and CRB.

The 20 teams competing in the tournament are aiming for promotion to the top tier of Brazilian football. At the end of the 38 rounds, the two clubs with the highest point totals are promoted directly to Série A. The teams finishing between third and sixth place will compete in the playoffs for the other two promotion spots.

END OF CRICIÚMA’S UNBEATEN RUN

Against Criciúma, Athletic opened the scoring as early as the 5th minute, with a goal by Pedro Oliveira from outside the box. At home, Esquadrão Guerreiro was clinical in front of goal, and the second came 10 minutes into the second half through Wilinton Aponzá.

With the result, the Minas Gerais side reached 31 points and moved into ninth place, just two points behind sixth-placed Novorizontino.

Tigre, coming off a goalless draw with Náutico, remain top of the table with 40 points, but saw their lead shrink. They are now two points ahead of second-placed Juventude, who have 38. The defeat ended the Série B leaders’ 15-match unbeaten streak.

OTHER RESULTS AND UPCOMING MATCHES

Other highlights of the round include São Bernardo’s 3-1 win over Operário-PR and Sport’s 1-0 victory over Vila Nova. The two teams that picked up all three points are fighting to break into the G-6, while the defeated sides are, for now, in the qualification zone to compete for a place in Série A.
