Fran Baños kept his vow by scaling Jaizkibel to the Sanctuary of Guadalupe with a seven-kilo cross after Real Sociedad’s Copa triumph.

According to Diario Vasco, the Irun local set off at 10am in dry, sport-friendly conditions, accompanied by a group of Real Sociedad supporters, echoing a similar 2021 march.

He said the day went brilliantly, with a wonderful temperature and priceless encouragement from those they met. Although easier than his first San Marcial expedition for Real’s Copa meeting with Athletic, the cross’s small transport wheel failed again.

They hoisted the cross onto shoulders and carried on. The climb took about one hour 45 minutes, as traffic, walkers and Real supporters cheered and some even joined.

They numbered about 15, and near the finish a father and his son joined. At the summit they shared lunch with the peña Basque Txuri-Urdin Hondarribia.

A fresh challenge is already defined, but only if Real secure a European title. Baños plans to run the Behobia carrying the cross and hopes it can be next year.
