Sevilla fan accused of calling Vinícius ‘monkey’ to stand trial on Tuesday | OneFootball

Seville Provincial Court will on Tuesday, 22 September hear the case against a Sevilla supporter accused of racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr during a LaLiga EA Sports match in October 2023.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, prosecutors are seeking one year and nine months in prison.

The fixture between Sevilla and Real Madrid took place on 21 October 2023 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, on matchday 10. Between minutes 83 and 86, the accused, seated in the Gol Norte close to the pitch, allegedly directed repeated insults at the player, targeting the colour of his skin.

He is accused of mimicking primate gestures and repeatedly shouting the word ‘mono’, as well as making monkey noises, ‘uh, uh, uh, uh’. The conduct is said to have caused feelings of frustration, shame and humiliation, undermining his intrinsic dignity.

The episode unfolded in front of spectators in the stadium and a significant television, radio, print and digital audience.

Case documents note that such chants and gestures have been used publicly by groups of fans in different countries to offend black footballers during matches.
