Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic was attacked by a pitch invader in the late stages of his side's 2-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven on Thursday evening.

The Spanish side boasted a 3-0 lead from the first leg of the knockout tie and so still advanced on aggregate against a PSV side who scored twice late on and even finished the game with ten men after Mauro Junior's 97th-minute red card.

Amid all the late chaos, a pitch invader ran on and swung a punch at Dmitrovic, who successfully evaded the attack and wrestled the fan to the ground before security intervened and removed the supporter.

"He came and pushed me from behind," Dmitrovic told reporters after the game.

"I've never seen anything like it. I'm going to shut up so I don't say what I really wanted to do to him. I'm just glad I knew where he was and could pin him down. Luckily, I stopped, otherwise other things could have happened.

"He was probably angry about the result and a bit crazy already. He tried to hit me and I managed to grab him and wait for security to arrive. It's never nice to see this in football, it shouldn't happen and from now on I hope these things are well punished."

Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli, who branded the incident 'a disgrace', later added: “It is incredibly sad that this has happened. I find it worrying; this type of thing needs to stop. We need to work together to ensure it does. This cannot happen again in the future."
