Sevilla’s late comeback against Espanyol tightened the relegation battle, their 2-1 win lifting them to 12th on 40 points and heightening the squeeze on Valencia, Elche and Levante.
Matchday 35 opened briskly at the bottom. Levante beat Osasuna, then Elche drew 1-1 with Alavés in Alicante. Mallorca reached 39 after holding Villarreal, nudging ahead of Valencia and Elche.
At the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Espanyol led through Dolan on 56 minutes. Sevilla turned it late, Andrés Castrín equalising on 82 and Akor Adams striking the winner. The visitors protested the second goal, arguing it followed a foul and even a throw in taken with the foot.
Sevilla have taken six points from two matches and now sit above Elche, Espanyol, Valencia, Mallorca and Girona, with the last three still to play this round. As reported by Superdeporte, the safety line feels higher, recalling 2011 when Deportivo went down with 43.
Espanyol’s slump continues, with only 6 of the last 54 points collected. Their last LaLiga win in Seville came in 2010/11, since when the hosts have nine victories and four draws, the most recent a 1-1 last season.
The survival skirmish resumes on Sunday and Monday: 10/05 Athletic v Valencia, 16:15, and 10/05 Oviedo v Getafe, 18:30. On 11/05, Rayo Vallecano v Girona, 21:00.
