Monchi is in talks to join RCD Espanyol, a move that adds extra edge to this weekend’s survival showdown between the clubs.

According to Mundo Deportivo, negotiations are advanced and he is close to becoming the Barcelona club’s director of football. The former Sevilla chief left Nervión three years ago for the Premier League, then moved into CD San Fernando’s management, and is now poised for a LaLiga return away from Seville.

He was seen in a private box at Cornellà-El Prat last weekend while Espanyol faced Real Madrid. Any appointment is said to depend on the team remaining in Primera.

The balance could swing back towards Nervión if Sergio Ramos were to join Sevilla’s ownership, with his strong relationship with Monchi viewed as a potential accelerator. A comeback would also require Sevilla to secure survival.

The immediate backdrop is a direct battle for safety at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. Espanyol are winless in 17 league fixtures.

Only two points separate them, 39 for Espanyol and 37 for Sevilla. Victory would represent a major step towards safety and could shape both clubs’ planning, along with Monchi’s next move.
