Sevilla are racing to finalise a defensive midfielder before the deadline, with Edson Álvarez, Jefferson Lerma and Soungoutou Magassa emerging on the shortlist to round off Luis García Plaza’s squad.

According to ABC de Sevilla, the club have sounded out the trio in the closing hours. The search is proving complex and time is tight, with sporting director José Ignacio Navarro working against the clock and unwilling to rush a signing that does not fully convince.

The preferred profile is a pivot who can also operate at centre-back, a versatility reminiscent of Nemanja Gudelj during his captaincy. Abdel Abqar of Getafe has been offered but is not a priority given his more exclusively defensive profile.

Álvarez is viewed internally as an especially strong fit for that brief.

Lerma is another alternative, having previously played for Levante, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Magassa, the younger option, also matches the versatility Sevilla want. Developed at Monaco, he has represented France at youth level and won silver at Paris 2024.

Sevilla will exhaust their options but will not add a player for the sake of it. If none of the alternatives convinces or the numbers do not work, they could wait until the winter window.
