Sevilla ‘to sign’ Patrik Mercado as Wolves January move stalls

Wolves’ January plans have been dealt a setback, with their move for Independiente del Valle midfielder Patrik Mercado no longer on course.

According to BolaVIP, the Ecuadorian could be sold to Sevilla, who have moved in front, while Wolves may still bid but their poor Premier League campaign leaves a 2026 deal in doubt.

Just over a month ago, a switch to Molineux was said to be virtually finalised. Mercado has seven goals and 11 assists this season, a return comparable to Matheus Cunha’s output in the last campaign.

Rob Edwards faces a mid-season overhaul after a poor first half of the campaign, and Wolves cannot afford to leave business late. Budget is tight, with Fosun unlikely to spend heavily while relegation feels a threat.

That could mean players such as Jorgen Strand Larsen or Joao Gomes make way. Interest in Sam Surridge hints the Norwegian might be the one to depart, particularly after Tolu Arokodare’s upturn.

Jhon Arias, Fer Lopez and Mateus Mane can all fill the roaming role, though the first two have made little impact since arriving. Mane’s emergence may reduce the need for an attacking midfielder, but a possible exit for Lopez could change the picture.

Any move for Mercado would carry risk, given he has no experience in the Premier League or in England, an approach that has not worked at all for Wolves this season.
