First Half

The game began at a slow tempo, with little to separate the sides in the opening quarter of an hour. The only real moment of danger came when Sam McCallum’s long throw unsettled the visiting defence, and Ben Mee dragged his follow-up attempt just wide after a half-clearance caused confusion in the box.

For much of the first half, neither team managed to take control, but as the half-hour mark passed, United began to find their stride. Danny Ings almost provided the breakthrough with a diving header that drew a sharp save from goalkeeper Hamer. The veteran forward then turned creator, setting up both Jairo Riedewald and McCallum in quick succession, the first effort was charged down, and the second was hacked clear off the line by Jimmy Dunne. Tyrese Campbell also went close, flashing a driven shot across goal that had Hamer beaten but rolled just wide of the far post.

Second Half

At the break, Wilder was forced into a defensive reshuffle, with Mark McGuinness coming on for Mee. The visitors threatened soon after the restart, as Ilias Chair released Dembélé on the counterattack, only for the winger’s curling strike to bend beyond the far post. Moments later, penalty appeals for a challenge on Callum O’Hare were ignored by referee Smith, and Burrell tested Michael Cooper’s handling with a fierce effort following another rapid counter.

United gradually regained momentum in the closing stages. Substitute Tom Davies injected energy into midfield and almost created the opener, sliding Campbell through on goal before Dunne intervened with an excellent recovery tackle. Another replacement, Chiedozie Ogbene, delivered a teasing cross to the far post where McCallum’s header seemed destined for the corner, but Hamer dived full stretch to tip it away.

The home side kept pressing until the final whistle. Sydie Peck muscled his way into the area and got a deflected shot away, only to see the ball clip the post and rebound out. It was a moment that summed up United’s misfortune on the day.
