Coventry City have opened talks with Sheffield United to bring Gus Hamer back to the CBS Arena

Sheffield United will want to get back to a strong competitive level in the Championship next season.

The Blades had a difficult 2025/26 in which they finished 13th in the table just 12 months on from reaching the play-off final.

The Yorkshire outfit were 13 points adrift of the top six, and were never really in contention for promotion to the Premier League.

But this summer offers the club the opportunity to reset and better prepare for the campaign ahead.

However, the future of Gustavo Hamer is once again the subject of transfer speculation, with just a few weeks remaining in the market.

It’s been claimed by journalist Will Oelrich that Coventry City are keen on bringing the playmaker back to the CBS Arena, having initially sold him to the Championship side in 2023.

Coventry are back in the Premier League for next season, with Frank Lampard overseeing their Championship title win in 2025/26.

And the Sky Blues are looking to build a team capable of remaining in the top flight long-term, which has led to them turning their attention to Hamer.

It’s not the first time the 29-year-old’s future at Sheffield United has been uncertain during a summer transfer window, as last year’s failure to gain promotion also fuelled plenty of speculation.

While things dragged on until he eventually stayed, it’s more likely than not that this will be the end of his time at Bramall Lane.

It will come as an obviously massive blow for Chris Wilder to lose him given how important he’s been to the club over the last three seasons.

But their one demand has to be that talks are concluded quickly, as Sheffield United will need ample time to secure a replacement.

In an underwhelming year for the Yorkshire outfit, Hamer still contributed five goals and 12 assists last season, and losing someone with that attacking threat will be huge.

This summer has already seen Coventry take their time to secure a permanent move for loanee Carl Rushworth, so we know they can drag their heels in transfer negotiations.

Sheffield United simply cannot afford to let that happen with Hamer.

There will be players in Wilder’s squad who will see Hamer’s potential departure as a chance to step up, including Callum O’Hare and Tahith Chong.

However, the reality of the situation is that Sheffield United will want to scour the market to find someone that can take up his role in the squad.

Hamer has been a creator and a goal scorer for the Blades, and missing someone with that kind of firepower will be noticed.

But if Sheffield United can get into the start of August knowing that he is definitely leaving, then this at least gives the Yorkshire outfit a month to see what the market has to offer.

The 29-year-old really was an ideal star to have in the squad, as he was also quite a versatile player and could plug into multiple positions and perform well consistently.

He was a top creator for Sheffield United last season, creating 2.34 chances per 90, while also taking 2.55 shots each game in his own right (all stats from Fotmob).

Hamer had a combined expected goals and expected assists (xG+xA) of 0.61 per 90, which is a formidable level of attacking threat to have to replace.

Of course, Sheffield United will want to maximise the fee they can receive from the Premier League side if a deal is to go through (although his 2027 contract expiry will limit this potential), but the real key will be to complete a sale sooner rather than later.
