Sheffield United could be docked 12 points if they are declared insolvent at a winding-up hearing on Wednesday, amid a continuing ownership dispute.
According to Daily Echo, former owners United World say the club could face insolvency and have issued a winding-up petition, claiming £35 million remains unpaid from the 2024 takeover.
The current owners insist the Blades are financially healthy this season, though the row with United World is unresolved.
Any deduction would have major implications for the Championship promotion picture, with Sheffield United among the sides expected to challenge.
United World has warned the hearing could lead to administration if the outstanding amount is not settled.
The EFL is aware of the situation and says it will consider developments in line with its regulations.
Sheffield United began their Championship campaign with a goalless draw against Birmingham City, while Saints lost 2-1 at Watford.
Saints might not be the only Championship side on minus points for long.
