Sheffield United have parted company with head coach Ruben Selles after a torrid opening to the Championship season in which the club lost all five league matches, scoring just once.
The Spaniard’s dismissal, confirmed by BBC Sport, comes less than 24 hours after Friday night’s 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road, a result that left the Blades bottom of the table and compounded growing discontent among supporters.
Selles, 42, had been appointed in the summer to replace Chris Wilder following United’s play-off final defeat to Sunderland. His arrival was billed as a fresh chapter for a side desperate to return to the Premier League, yet his tenure quickly unravelled. The campaign began with a bruising 4-1 home defeat to Bristol City, and early elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Birmingham City set the tone.
A run of narrow defeats to Swansea, Millwall, and league leaders Middlesbrough followed, before Ipswich’s demolition underlined the fragility of a team unable to find confidence or rhythm.
In a statement, the club cited “a disappointing start” and the need to act swiftly to salvage the season. Attention now turns to finding a successor capable of halting the slide.
