Sheffield United's US owners, the COH Sports group, could already be looking to sell the club despite only purchasing the Blades in December 2024.

Sheffield United secured a comfortable 3-0 win over bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Sunday, in what was an impressive display by Chris Wilder’s side.

Whilst it was a huge win for the team, the Blades remain in a difficult position, as they are in the bottom three, although they’re now just one point from safety.

As we know, it has been a hectic campaign already for Sheffield United, and the derby victory can’t hide the fact they’re massively underachieving, with the decision to appoint Ruben Selles one that spectacularly backfired from relatively new owners COH Sports.

Sheffield United facing an uncertain future as owners consider sale

For many, that managerial call was the first big task for the new owners, who bought the club from Prince Abdullah in December 2024.

After controversially sacking Wilder following the play-off final defeat to Sunderland, the US group have already had to return to the boyhood fan, whilst their transfer approach, which centred on data-led recruits, didn’t work out.

He explains that they are set to review their plans for the club in the New Year, and even though they may seek external investment, a full sale ‘cannot be ruled out’.

Naturally, that had fans discussing the possibility of the club switching hands once more, but it’s fair to say that many supporters wouldn’t miss COH Sports if a sale was agreed.

Another questioned whether their approach was worthwhile, as they admitted a quick sale would come as no surprise.

This fan felt they had 'gambled' on buying a club that would be in the Premier League, given Sheffield United were firmly in the mix to go up when they finalised the deal last season.

Another supporter criticised the owners for the way they've run the club since their arrival.

Finally, this fan stated the fact they're going to even have a review about whether to keep the club suggests they aren't as fully committed as they should be.

Sheffield United need off-field stability as they prepare for a difficult future

You would have to question the motive of the Sheffield United owners if they were looking to sell the club so shortly after buying the Blades, and it would make people think it was all about winning promotion last season.

Realistically, the team aren't going to win promotion this season, and the immediate concern is to stay up, so that will be another year of parachute payments gone, and that makes the task of returning to the Premier League much harder moving forward.

Therefore, it's important that the club has the right structure in place if they are to kick-on, and fans would understandably doubt whether COH Sports can provide that considering the mistakes that have been made over the past few months.

So, it will be interesting to see how this plays out, but Sheffield United fans will want clarity on the long-term plans and ambitions of the owners after what has been a miserable period under their guidance so far.
