The Owls were recently bested 3-0 at home by rivals Sheffield United in the Steel City derby, despite the Blades’ dreadful performance levels this season, which did not go down well with supporters.

Henrik Pedersen’s side are now 18 points adrift from safety at the bottom of the second-tier, which almost already confirms their relegation to League One after just 16 matches.

Matters haven’t been helped by an automatic 12-point deduction for being placed into administration, but that’s a penalty most fans were willing to pay in order to get rid of former owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Despite their current troubles, Wednesday look to have avoided further punishment next season.

Due to the financial mess Chansiri created at Hillsborough, Wednesday were potentially set to be hit with further point deductions, which could’ve impacted them next term.

However, according to the Sheffield Star, some of those fears may now have been quelled.

It is stated that administrators have already received multiple bids to take over the Owls, with that number potentially rising to six or seven.

They have all submitted offers good enough to satisfy the creditors the club owes, which is a figure believed to be in the region of £30m.

Should a bid of that stature materialise and all payments are made, Wednesday will avoid a 15-point deduction which would’ve impacted them next season.

The Steel City outfit are completely out of the woods though, as it is reported that they still may be liable to receive two possible further points deductions for breaches of EFL regulations, although they would impact the current term’s tally.

Given how much ground Wednesday have to make up just to join the relegation scrap, it seems almost impossible for them to retain their Championship status this season.

Even without their 12-point deduction, the Owls would still sit bottom of the Championship, which highlights how uncompetitive they have been on the pitch.

There are viable reasons for this, due to a lack of activity in the transfer market due to embargoes caused by Chansiri’s antics, but preparing for next season in League One seems to be their best bet now.

Doing so without the looming threat of a 15-point deduction will be a huge relief, as that would’ve scuppered any potential promotion plans they had.

Instead, the Owls can refocus on preparing for a push back towards the second-tier next term, back on a level playing field with the rest of the division.
