Sheffield United could be priced out of a move for Lewis Dobbin this summer

Sheffield United are on the hunt for another wide attacker this summer after they secured the services of Brentford's Romelle Donovan for the season, but they've encountered a hurdle which may stop them from signing Lewis Dobbin.

Dobbin is one of the more highly sought-after players amongst top Championship clubs this summer, following a breakout season at Preston North End in 2025/26.

The 23-year-old netted 11 and assisted eight in 41 games in all competitions at Deepdale, but returns to Aston Villa with his future increasingly likely to lie away from Villa Park.

Dobbin cost Unai Emery's side a reported £10 million in the summer of 2024 when he moved from Everton, but he's yet to make his debut, and with Aston Villa's European stock increasing over the past couple of years, it's evident that the level of the squad has outgrown the versatile forward.

There's a queue of Championship sides forming for his signature, with Wolves and Southampton joining Middlesbrough in registering interest this summer, while the Blades were linked with him towards the end of his time at Preston.

With Dobbin costing Aston Villa around eight figures a couple of years ago, it's clear that Unai Emery's side don't want to make too much of a loss on the 23-year-old, which could be detrimental to Sheffield United's pursuit this summer.

According to Danny Hall of the Sheffield Star, Villa are favouring a sale this summer as they look to recoup as much money as possible ahead of another season in the Champions League. Their asking price, north of £5 million, is more than the Blades are willing to pay.

Sheffield United are having to tighten their purse strings this summer as they navigate the new Squad Cost Ratio rulings in the Championship, paired with their first second-tier season without Premier League parachute payments since the 2018/19 campaign.

More speculation formed surrounding finances when former owner Prince Abdullah issued a winding-up petition against COH Sports over claims they owe them £35 million.

Plus, Chris Wilder is currently overseeing a bit of a squad overhaul at Bramall Lane, as he looks to trim the fat from last season's bloated side and focus on bringing in quality in several positions ahead of what is hoped to be a campaign where the Blades return to being a play-off-calibre outfit.

The Star states that, alongside Kalvin Phillips, with talks still ongoing between the South Yorkshire side and Manchester City, the Sheffield United boss wants to bring in a right-back and at least two centre-backs this summer.

There's no doubting the quality that Dobbin has and his potential to make it in the Premier League, but a high seven-figure bid, when other positions need addressing too, seems to be a step too far for the Blades.

It's never a good thing when a club misses out on a target because they feel they've been priced out of a deal to bring in a good player, but in this instance, it reminds Sheffield United fans of the grim reality that they lack the spending power they've had in recent years.

Danny Hall revealed the bad news on X alongside the article, with the caption, "Understand United braced for disappointment..." and one fan commented, "Assume we'll be hearing that first bit quite a lot this season, utter shambles."

"Funniest club ever man," another said, while someone sarcastically added, "😂😂 shock."

Other Blades fans have defended the decision not to continue their pursuit due to the asking price, believing that "North of £5 million is a bit steep if I'm honest." "Tbf, £5 million is steep for him," another added.

Either way, it's a disappointment for Sheffield United, who, this time last season and the season before that, likely wouldn't have had much of an issue with spending £5 million on multiple different targets.

They'll be hoping that Donovan, and whoever they target next in the wide areas, can make as much of an impact as many are expecting Dobbin to do, wherever he lands this summer.
